ChatGPT Now Has 1.2 Billion Weekly Users and OpenAI Just Made It Do Something Nobody Expected

TL;DR: OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 with a new "Intelligent UI" feature that lets ChatGPT generate interactive charts, forms, calculators, and buttons directly inside conversations. The model starts responding 44% faster than GPT-5.6 Instant on web-search questions. Over 1.2 billion people now use ChatGPT every single week, and the new features started rolling out to paid users on October 7.

I opened ChatGPT this morning and something felt genuinely different. Not just faster — it actually felt like a different product.

OpenAI has been building toward this for a while, but GPT-6 with what they're calling "Intelligent UI" is the moment it all clicks. Instead of ChatGPT just answering your question in text, it now builds things inside the chat window. Charts that update when you change a number. Forms you can fill out. Calculators. Buttons that trigger follow-up actions. This is not a plugin or an add-on. It's baked right in.

What Is Intelligent UI and Why Does It Actually Matter?

Think about how many times you've asked ChatGPT for something and then had to copy the answer, paste it somewhere else, format it manually, and make it actually useful. Intelligent UI cuts out most of those extra steps. If you ask for a budget breakdown, you get an interactive spreadsheet-style table. Ask for a comparison of options and you might get a side-by-side grid you can sort. It's still early, but the direction is unmistakable: the AI is becoming the interface, not just the brain behind it.

The Speed Boost Is Real

GPT-6 Instant starts responding about 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on web-search questions, according to OpenAI's own internal testing. That might sound like a minor stat until you're in the middle of trying to get something done and you realize you haven't been waiting at all. It changes the feeling of using the tool — less like submitting a query, more like talking to someone who already has the answer loaded up.

1.2 Billion People Per Week. That Number Still Hits Hard.

OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every single week. To put that in perspective, there are about 8 billion people on earth. Roughly 1 in 7 of them are using this thing weekly. That's not "popular tech product" territory anymore. That's approaching the scale of Google Search, WhatsApp, or YouTube. And with GPT-6 making the experience meaningfully better, that number isn't going down anytime soon.

Who Gets the New Features and When?

Paid tiers — ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team — got access starting October 7. Free and Go users were scheduled to get it on October 8, so if you're on the free tier and haven't tried it yet, go check. OpenAI tends to roll things out in waves, so if you're not seeing it today, give it another day or two.

Where This Is Headed

The interactive UI angle lines up with something I've been watching for the past year: the race to make AI feel less like a search engine and more like a coworker who can actually build things alongside you. Microsoft is doing it with Copilot. Google is pushing it with Gemini in Workspace. But OpenAI is the one with 1.2 billion weekly users to experiment on, which gives them a feedback loop nobody else can match. Whatever they're building toward with Intelligent UI, we're going to find out fast.
