5 Numbers From the 690 Billion Dollar AI Infrastructure Sprint That Will Change How You Think About Tech

TL;DR: The five biggest tech companies spent a combined $690 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, with Microsoft alone committing $120 billion. The power grid cannot keep up. Nvidia controls 90% of the market. And somehow users are still getting it for free. Here are the five numbers that explain what is really happening.

I have been trying to wrap my head around the scale of what is happening in AI infrastructure right now, and the honest truth is that the numbers are so large they stop feeling real. So let me break it down into five figures that actually mean something.

Number 1: $690 Billion in Total Capex

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple collectively announced or spent $690 billion on AI-related capital expenditures in 2026. That is not revenue. That is money going out the door. For context, the entire GDP of Switzerland is around $800 billion. The tech industry is building a country-sized piece of infrastructure this year alone. And this number does not even include the secondary spending by Oracle, IBM, and the hyperscaler-adjacent companies racing to catch up.

Number 2: $120 Billion From Microsoft Alone

Microsoft committed $120 billion of that total, making it the single largest spender in the history of corporate infrastructure investment in a single year. This is the OpenAI relationship paying out at an enormous scale. Microsoft has already signed power purchase agreements locking up electricity that will not come online until 2028. They are building data centers faster than the power grid can feed them. And the bet is simple: whoever controls the compute controls the AI future.

Number 3: 3 Years Behind on the Power Grid

Power grid expansion is running about three years behind AI compute demand. Data centers are signing electricity contracts for capacity that simply does not exist yet. Some AI campuses are running their own natural gas generators on-site because the grid literally cannot supply what they need. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has a backlog of transmission projects measured in years, not months. This is the constraint that nobody in Silicon Valley wants to talk about because it is completely outside their control.

Number 4: 90 Percent Nvidia Market Share

Nvidia controls roughly 90% of the AI training chip market. AMD has made real progress with the MI300X and the upcoming MI400 series, but the CUDA software ecosystem is so deeply embedded in AI research and production workflows that switching costs are enormous. Google has its own TPUs and Amazon has Trainium, but neither is displacing Nvidia at scale for external customers. This monopoly-level position is exactly why Nvidia profit margins are running at historic highs and why the chip price increases we saw announced today hurt more than the headline numbers suggest.

Number 5: $0 Cost to Most Users Right Now

With $690 billion going out the door and most AI products still free or nearly free to end users, something does not add up. And that is because it does not add up yet. The companies burning this capital are betting on a future where AI becomes so embedded in everything that monetization becomes unavoidable. ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month. Google Gemini Advanced is $20 per month. Microsoft Copilot Pro is $30 per month. But the compute cost of running frontier models at scale is far higher than what those subscription fees recover. The free access is intentional. Build the habit first, capture the value later.

Why This All Matters to You

Companies do not spend $690 billion in a single year unless they are very confident the return is coming. That means AI is about to get a lot more expensive for enterprise customers, a lot more capable for consumers, and a lot more embedded in every piece of software you touch every day. The free lunch you are eating right now is being subsidized by capital that expects to be paid back. The bill will come. The question is just when, and what form it takes.
