Tesla Just Dropped a Bombshell at Giga Texas — Cybercab Ramp, Optimus Factory, and a 5.2M Sq Ft Expansion All at Once

Today (July 7), Tesla held a major announcement event at Giga Texas. Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy had teased on June 29th that "there will be some cool news about things happening at Giga Texas on July 7" — and when the curtain dropped, it wasn't just one thing. Three massive announcements hit at once.

Bombshell #1: Giga Texas 5.2 Million Square Foot Expansion Confirmed

Tesla filed its expansion plans with Travis County today, officially confirming the buildout. On top of the existing Giga Texas footprint, Tesla is adding 5.2 million square feet (approx. 483,000 square meters) — a 50% increase in size. Giga Texas is already one of the largest buildings in the world, and it's about to get even bigger.

Two key new facilities are included:

  • Terafab North Campus — A 200,000 sq ft next-gen AI semiconductor R&D, development, and manufacturing facility. Tesla will make its own AI chips on-site.
  • Optimus Dedicated Factory — A massive robot production facility stretching 4,000 feet (~1.2km) along the main factory. Long-term target: 1 million Optimus units per year.

Total estimated construction cost: $5–10 billion (approx. 7–14 trillion KRW). A 290-acre ecological park along the Colorado River is also planned alongside the expansion.

Bombshell #2: Cybercab Production Ramp Is Already Happening

Drone footage from the Giga Texas parking lot already shows over 85 Cybercabs on the lot. Production started in April, and Tesla is now in the ramp-up phase. The Cybercab is a fully autonomous robotaxi — no steering wheel, no pedals, no driver.

Tesla's robotaxi service has already expanded to Texas (Austin, Dallas, Houston) and California, and as of July 3rd, Miami (Florida) was added to the list. Florida's frequent rain and intense sun present some of the most challenging environments for camera-based FSD — Tesla taking it on is a signal of growing confidence in the system.

Bombshell #3: Optimus Fremont Pilot Line Live 7–8 Months Earlier Than Expected

Elon Musk shared photos directly from Fremont's pilot Optimus production line. The existing Model S/X production space is being converted into an Optimus manufacturing line. Pilot production begins at Fremont in July–August, with the dedicated Giga Texas factory targeting full-scale production in the second half of 2027.

Why Does This Matter for Investors and Tesla Fans?

This isn't just a factory getting bigger. It's Tesla signaling a fundamental transformation — from car company to AI and robotics company. Here's what's converging:

  • In-house AI chip production (Terafab) → reduced reliance on Nvidia
  • Cybercab mass production → robotaxi platform revenue acceleration
  • Optimus mass production → potential game changer across all of manufacturing

Tesla stock rose yesterday (July 6) ahead of this announcement. The odds of Tesla becoming a multi-trillion dollar company over the next few years just got a lot more interesting.
