Why This Matters Beyond the AI Policy Debate
Here's what's interesting about this letter: the companies signing it don't agree on everything. Meta and Microsoft have very different strategies around AI. Hugging Face and Palantir serve completely different markets. Nvidia, as a chip company, nominally benefits when anyone builds AI — open or closed — because they all need GPUs.
But Jensen's framing earlier this week to Axios is revealing. He said American companies should be free to use Chinese AI models. This Is Also a Business Move — And That's Fine
Let's be honest: Nvidia benefits enormously when open-weight models proliferate. Every researcher running Llama, Mistral, or Kimi on their own hardware is buying Nvidia GPUs. Every startup building on open models rather than renting API access from OpenAI or Anthropic is potentially a future data center customer. Jensen's principled stance on open AI aligns perfectly with Nvidia's business interests.
But you know what? That alignment doesn't make him wrong. The best arguments in business are often the ones where principle and profit point in the same direction. The open-source software movement was championed by companies like IBM and Red Hat that also happened to benefit from it. That didn't make the open-source argument less correct.
What This Means for the AI Landscape in 2026
The letter landing now is not an accident. There are ongoing policy conversations in Washington about whether AI models should face export controls, safety mandates, or registration requirements. Having 20+ major tech companies sign a unified statement backing open-weight AI gives the open-source camp a much more powerful voice in those conversations.
It also signals where the industry consensus is moving. A year ago, the debate was whether open models were even safe to release. Today, the CEO of the company whose chips power virtually every frontier AI lab is publicly saying that open models are actually better for safety than closed ones. The Overton window has shifted dramatically.
