OpenAI Just Made GPT-5.6 Available to Every Small Business — And It's Cheaper Than You Think
I run a small business. And every time I hear "AI is transforming small businesses," I roll my eyes a little — because most of the tools are either too expensive, too complicated, or require a team of engineers to set up. But what OpenAI just announced this week actually made me stop and pay attention.
What OpenAI Just Launched
On July 21, 2026, OpenAI officially launched the ChatGPT for Small Businesses program, a major push designed to move small companies beyond casual chatbot use into real, repeatable, multi-step AI workflows. The centerpiece is ChatGPT Work — an AI agent powered by GPT-5.6, OpenAI's most advanced model — now available to businesses of all sizes.
Here's what ChatGPT Work actually does: you give it an outcome. It gathers information across your connected apps, breaks the job into smaller steps, and completes them independently — staying with complex projects for hours. And the output isn't a chatbot reply. It's finished work: spreadsheets, slides, documents, and interactive web apps.
What's Included in the Program
OpenAI isn't just dropping software and walking away. The small business program includes virtual webinars and in-person training sessions, interactive guides tailored to small business workflows, pre-built agentic plugins that automate common small business tasks right out of the box, and partner integrations with Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian, and more.
These partner integrations are a big deal. Instead of building custom AI workflows from scratch, small businesses can plug into templates designed for their specific industry — whether you're in retail, accounting, logistics, or services.
The Price Is Lower Than I Expected
OpenAI is pricing the ChatGPT Business tier at roughly $25 per user per month. For access to GPT-5.6 — a model that scored 96.7% on OpenAI's internal Capture the Flag security evaluation — that is genuinely competitive. For context, hiring a full-time assistant in the US costs anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 per month. Getting a GPT-5.6-powered agent for $25/month that can handle entire multi-step workflows? That math is very interesting.
The Milestone Nobody Mentioned
Buried in the announcement was a staggering stat: 10 million users are now using ChatGPT Work and Codex combined. That's not a soft launch number. That's mass adoption. OpenAI is already at scale with this product — the small business push is about bringing in the next wave of users who haven't moved beyond the basic chatbot.
Is This Actually Different From Before?
Fair question. We've heard "AI for small businesses" pitches for years. The difference now is the underlying model. GPT-5.6 isn't just a chatbot — it's an agentic system capable of sustained, autonomous work across multiple steps and connected apps. Earlier versions of ChatGPT were tools you used. GPT-5.6 Work is a system that works for you. That is a real distinction.
A recent HCLTech study of 500 enterprise decision-makers found that 90% say AI is transforming their workflows — but only 18% say it's delivering significant revenue impact. That gap isn't in the AI itself. It's in adoption and workflow integration. OpenAI's small business program is a direct attempt to close that gap.
My Take
I'm going to test this for my own business this week. Specifically, I want to see how well ChatGPT Work handles research-to-report workflows — something I do manually right now. If it can take an input, pull data from my connected apps, and spit out a finished document, that would save me hours every week.
At $25/month, the barrier to entry is low enough to just try it. I'll let you know how it goes.
