Apple Just Revealed a $1,999 Foldable iPhone — And It's Unlike Anything They've Done in 19 Years
I've been covering Apple products for years, and I genuinely didn't think I'd see the day. But here we are — Apple just officially announced the iPhone Duo, its very first foldable smartphone, and my jaw is still on the floor.
This is Apple's biggest iPhone design reinvention since the original iPhone launched in 2007. No more candy bar. No more single slab of glass. The iPhone Duo folds — like a book, like a wallet, like the future I was promised.
So What Exactly Is the iPhone Duo?
Apple unveiled the Duo at its September 9th event, and the specs are genuinely impressive:
- Form factor: Book-style fold, shaped like a passport when closed
- Displays: 7.6-inch internal display (largest iPhone screen ever) + 5.4-inch outer display
- Thinnest iPhone ever when folded
- Under-display FaceTime camera — no notch on the inner screen
- Touch ID side button
- Up to 44 hours of video playback
- Starting price: $1,999 for 256GB, up to $3,199 for 2TB
- Preorders start October 16, shipping October 23
My Honest First Reaction
Two grand. That's the price of entry. I'll be honest — when I saw that number, I winced. That's MacBook territory. That's "I need to have a conversation with my bank account" territory.
But then I looked at what you're actually getting: a device that is essentially two screens in one, built by the company that arguably makes the best smartphone software on the planet. Apple didn't rush this. They've been watching Samsung and Google iterate on foldables for years, and they came in with a polished, fully thought-out product.
The hidden under-display camera alone shows Apple's commitment to making the inner screen experience distraction-free. And 44 hours of video playback? That's almost double what most phones offer today. Apple stock jumped 3.6% on the announcement, which tells you Wall Street agrees — this is a massive deal.
How Does It Stack Up to Samsung?
Samsung has been selling foldable phones since 2019. They've had years of head start. But Apple comes in with real advantages:
- Apple Silicon + iOS — the software and chip optimization Apple bakes in is still ahead of the competition
- The Apple ecosystem — if you're already on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, this slides in perfectly
- Build quality obsession — Apple has spent years perfecting aluminum and glass construction, and that obsession is now applied to a foldable hinge
Who Is This For?
At $1,999, this is not a mass-market device. Not yet. This is for power users who want a tablet and phone in one pocket, content creators who need a bigger canvas on the go, and business professionals tired of switching between their iPhone and iPad. Also: early adopters who want to flex the most exciting iPhone in Apple's history.
Should You Buy It?
If you can afford it without financial stress — absolutely worth considering. If you're planning to upgrade your iPhone this year, the Duo is the most compelling reason to splurge. If budget is a concern, the iPhone 18 lineup also launched alongside it at more traditional price points.
Personally, I'm going to wait until I can get my hands on one before committing $2,000. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't already tempted. The iPhone Duo preorders open October 16. Set a reminder.
