Apple Just Dropped Its First-Ever Foldable iPhone — And Nobody Is Ready for the Price Tag

I've been following Apple events for over a decade, and today's "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9 genuinely surprised me. Not because of the iPhone 18 Pro — that was expected. But because Apple actually did it: they launched their first foldable iPhone, and it comes with a price tag that made me do a double-take.

Meet the iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable Is Finally Here

Apple's first foldable phone is called the iPhone Duo, and it's not what the rumors suggested. Instead of a flip-style design like the Galaxy Z Flip, Apple went wide — a notebook-style horizontal fold that opens to a massive 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. When folded, you get a 5.4-inch outer display that handles all your notifications and quick tasks.

Here's what blew me away: it's billed as the thinnest iPhone ever made when open. Apple has clearly obsessed over the hinge mechanism, and early hands-on impressions suggest it doesn't have the crease problem that haunted early Galaxy Fold devices. Whether that holds up after a year of use, we'll see.

The specs are genuinely impressive: the Duo runs on Apple's brand-new A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, sports a 48MP Fusion main camera, and Apple promises all-day battery life despite the slim form factor. It supports all the same Apple Intelligence features as the Pro lineup.

The catch? Pricing starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model. Preorders open October 16 with a release date of October 23. That's a steep entry point, but honestly, for Apple's first foldable, it's not as outrageous as I feared — Samsung's flagship foldables cost nearly as much.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Incremental But Solid

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max round out the lineup, both powered by the same A20 Pro chip. Apple didn't go wild with the design changes here — this feels like a refinement year for the Pro models. The emphasis is on the new 2nm chip bringing meaningful speed and efficiency gains, plus continued improvements to the camera system.

Notably, Apple is skipping a standard iPhone 18 this year. The more affordable models won't arrive until spring 2027. So if you're not ready to spend Pro money, Apple is essentially asking you to wait — or stick with your current device.

iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and the Software Wave

Apple also announced release dates for their entire software lineup: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, tvOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 are all coming alongside the new hardware. These updates deepen Apple Intelligence integration and bring a refreshed design language across the board.

The Apple Watch lineup also got new models, and AirPods received an update — though Apple kept those announcements brief, clearly saving the spotlight for the iPhone Duo.

My Take: Apple Just Changed the Game — Again

The iPhone Duo is a genuine category-defining moment. Apple rarely launches a product that feels truly new, but this is it. Is $1,999 too much? For most people, yes. But Apple isn't targeting everyone on day one — they're targeting the premium enthusiast who wants to own a piece of history.

The real test comes in 12 months when we find out how the hinge holds up, how the crease looks, and whether iOS 27 is actually optimized for that large inner display. But today? Apple showed up, and they showed up big.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo go on sale October 23. If you want to be in line on day one, preorders open October 16.
