Anthropic Just Beat OpenAI for the First Time in History — And the Numbers Behind It Will Shock You

I've been watching the battle between Claude and ChatGPT for three years now, and I always assumed OpenAI would hold the business crown indefinitely. Then the Ramp AI Index dropped this week, and everything changed.

The Crossover That Nobody Saw Coming

The May 2026 Ramp AI Index — which tracks actual corporate card spending across more than 50,000 US businesses — just made it official: more American companies are now paying for Anthropic's Claude than for OpenAI's ChatGPT. In April 2026, Anthropic's business adoption hit 34.4 percent of tracked businesses, up 3.8 percentage points in a single month. OpenAI fell to 32.3 percent, down 2.9 points. That's a crossover of nearly 5 percentage points in one month, and it marks the first time since the AI race began that Claude has led ChatGPT in this metric.

How Fast Did Anthropic Actually Grow?

The growth trajectory is genuinely extraordinary. In June 2023, Anthropic had 0.03 percent of US businesses — essentially nobody. By April 2025, that had climbed to 7.94 percent. Then something broke open: by April 2026, Anthropic was at 34.44 percent. That's a roughly 4x increase in a single year while OpenAI's business adoption barely moved — growing just 0.3 percent over the same period. One company quadrupled. The other flatlined. And now the underdog is on top.

What Drove the Flip? Claude Code Changed Everything

The engine behind this growth isn't Claude the chatbot — it's Claude Code, the AI coding assistant that Anthropic launched and has been aggressively expanding throughout 2026. Per VentureBeat's analysis of the Ramp data, Claude Code is now the fastest-growing product in Anthropic's history, with one analysis estimating that 4 percent of all public GitHub commits worldwide were being authored by Claude Code as of June 2026 — double the share from just one month earlier. Software developers have enormous influence over which AI tools their companies pay for. When a dev team picks Claude Code over GitHub Copilot or Cursor, the AI adoption budget often follows them company-wide.

Wait — But a Separate Survey Tells a Different Story

Here's where it gets interesting. While Ramp's data shows Anthropic ahead, a separate IDC survey of more than 1,000 organizations from March 2026 found only 19 percent reporting extensive use of Claude — with Claude still trailing OpenAI and Google on that measure. How do both be true at the same time?

The answer is that they measure different things. Ramp tracks which AI vendor a business is paying for — a binary adoption signal based on actual spending data. IDC asks about depth of use, which captures how embedded an AI tool is in existing workflows. OpenAI has been in enterprise for longer and is more deeply integrated at many large companies. Anthropic is winning the new-adoption battle. OpenAI still owns more of the depth-of-use category.

The Warning Signs Anthropic Shouldn't Ignore

VentureBeat's analysis of the Ramp crossover isn't just celebratory — it comes with a sharp warning. Three threats could erase Anthropic's lead: escalating compute costs (training and inference are genuinely expensive at this scale), capacity constraints, and their own token-based pricing model. That pricing model drove revenue growth, but it's also been controversial. The Information published a report this week describing how Anthropic blindsided business partners with surprise competitive product launches and unannounced pricing changes — including a switch from flat per-seat fees to usage-based billing that could double or triple costs for heavy users.

A company that wins on developer adoption can lose it just as fast if pricing gets unpredictable. Enterprise procurement teams have long memories.

What This Means for You

If you're an individual using AI tools, this competition is great news. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are going to keep improving, keep cutting prices, and keep adding features to win your subscription dollar. The fact that the lead has flipped — even once — proves neither company has an unassailable position. And that pressure is exactly what drives innovation.

If you're a developer or IT decision-maker, this is the moment to look seriously at Claude Code if you haven't already. 4 percent of all GitHub commits is not a toy number — it's a signal that this tool is genuinely changing how professional engineering teams work.
