Nexpaq: The Modular Phone Case That Almost Changed Everything (Full Hands-On Review)

Before Project Ara made headlines, before LG's G5 tried it with a limited lineup, there was Nexpaq — a modular phone case system that launched on Kickstarter and promised to turn any smartphone into a customizable powerhouse. I got my hands on it early, and here's my honest take on whether it delivered.

What Is Nexpaq?

Nexpaq is a smartphone case with six built-in slots that accept small modular "tiles" — each about the size of a thick piece of gum. Each tile adds a different hardware function to your phone. The system was designed to work across iPhone and Android flagships, and was funded via Kickstarter with significant early community enthusiasm.

The concept was ambitious: rather than buying a new phone for better specs, you'd just swap in a new module. Better speaker? New tile. More storage? New tile. Dead battery on a long day? Extra battery tile.

The Modules Available

At launch, Nexpaq offered several modules including:

  • Extra battery (1000 mAh) — adds standby time without the bulk of a full battery case
  • MicroSD storage expansion — huge for Android users especially
  • Enhanced speaker — louder, fuller sound than the phone's built-in speaker
  • LED flashlight — separate from the camera flash, useful for sustained lighting
  • Air quality sensor — measures VOCs in your environment
  • Laser pointer — for presentations

What Actually Worked Well

The battery module is genuinely useful. Snapping an extra 1000 mAh onto your phone during a long day extends your usage without committing to the bulk of a dedicated battery case. The modular approach means you only carry the weight when you actually need it.

The MicroSD module was the sleeper hit for Android users whose phones lacked a card slot. Instant storage expansion with no cable or adapter required.

The build quality was better than expected for a Kickstarter product. The case snapped on securely, the module slots locked in firmly, and nothing rattled or felt cheap.

What Fell Short

Six slots sounds like a lot until you realize each module is small and the case itself only holds a few simultaneously. The air quality sensor and laser pointer felt like novelty additions that wouldn't survive real-world daily use consideration.

The companion app — required for many modules to function — was unpolished at launch. Module recognition was sometimes slow, and the interface felt like it needed another development cycle.

And the fundamental modular case problem applied here too: the system only works as long as the company keeps making modules. When support ends, you have an unusually thick case with limited tile options.

The Bigger Picture

Nexpaq was an honest attempt to solve a real problem: the disposable nature of smartphones. The team clearly believed in the idea and executed it better than most crowdfunded hardware attempts. The modules that focused on genuinely useful functions (battery, storage) worked. The platform concept was sound.

The challenge it faced — that all modular phone platforms face — is getting enough developer and manufacturer commitment to build a module ecosystem that makes the platform irreplaceable. Without that flywheel, even good modular systems stay niche.

Worth It?

For early adopters and tinkerers who like the idea of a customizable phone setup: yes. For the average user who wants a simple, reliable phone experience: the added complexity probably isn't worth it compared to just buying a good dedicated battery case.

Nexpaq was ahead of its time in some ways, and limited by the same constraints that have kept modular hardware from going truly mainstream. But it was a genuinely cool product that pointed toward something better.
