Is Your "Unlocked" Phone Actually Unlocked? The Truth Most Sellers Won't Tell You
I bought what was listed as a "factory unlocked" iPhone on eBay for a great price. Popped in my new carrier's SIM. "SIM Not Supported." I'd been burned by one of the most common — and most misunderstood — problems in the phone market. Here's everything you need to know before it happens to you.
What "Unlocked" Actually Means
An unlocked phone is one that isn't tied to a specific carrier's network and will work with any compatible SIM card. A locked phone has software on it that restricts it to one carrier — usually the carrier that subsidized the phone's original purchase price.
Sounds simple. The problem is that "unlocked" is one of the most misused words in phone listings, and there are actually multiple types of "unlocked" that work very differently.
The 4 Types of "Unlocked" — And Which Ones Actually Work
1. Factory Unlocked (TRUE unlocked): The phone was never tied to a carrier in the first place. Bought directly from Apple, Google, or a manufacturer. This is the real deal — it will work on any compatible carrier worldwide. If you need a truly unlocked phone, verify this is what you're buying.
2. Carrier Unlocked: Originally locked to a carrier, then officially unlocked by that carrier after the contract or installment plan was paid off. This is legitimate and works fine — but the phone may still lack certain bands used by other carriers.
3. "Unlocked" but Carrier-Specific Hardware: This is the sneaky one. Some phones sold by carriers are built with specific hardware that only supports that carrier's frequency bands. Even after unlocking, they may not work well (or at all) on other networks. Verizon phones used to be notorious for this.
4. Illegally Unlocked / Software Unlocked: The phone was "unlocked" using third-party tools, bypassing the carrier restriction without authorization. These can be unstable, can re-lock after software updates, and may violate your service agreement. Avoid these.
The Band Problem: Why "Unlocked" Doesn't Mean "Works Everywhere"
Even a legitimately unlocked phone may not work on every carrier because of radio frequency bands. Different carriers use different frequency bands for their networks (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all use different combinations). A phone built for one carrier may physically lack the radio hardware to connect to another carrier's strongest bands.
For example: a T-Mobile iPhone may technically be unlocked but miss Band 13 (Verizon's primary LTE band), giving you poor Verizon coverage even with an unlocked SIM. You'd have a signal, but it'd be weak or limited to older, slower bands.
How to Verify Before You Buy
Step 1: Get the phone's IMEI number from the seller (every phone has one — dial *#06# to see it).
Step 2: Check the IMEI on your target carrier's website. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon all have IMEI compatibility checkers. This tells you definitively whether the phone will work on their network.
Step 3: Look up the model number (e.g., A2111 vs A2160 for iPhones) to confirm which frequency bands the hardware supports. Apple and Google publish this information on their spec pages.
Step 4: For iPhones specifically, always choose the "global" model number rather than the carrier-specific version when possible — these have the widest band support.
Quick Test If You Already Have the Phone
Insert a SIM from a different carrier. If it connects and shows that carrier's name, it's unlocked. If you see "SIM Not Supported," "Invalid SIM," or "SIM Locked," it's locked or incompatible. You can request an unlock from the original carrier if the device is paid off and in good standing.
